A Student Initiated Project (SIP)
Curators: Erin Montgomery, Cody Luke and Rhonda Murray
Conceptually provoking and aesthetically rich, Imagined Realities features new works that reimagine and reinterpret elements of our everyday world through a wide range of media including photography, textiles, sculpture, painting and digital media. The exhibition presents emerging artistic practices that respond critically and poetically to the cultural, socio-political, environmental and economic dynamics of the current world. Imagined Realities seeks to extend traditional art practices by envisioning the world through autobiographical, feminist, material, narrative, postcolonial and scientific lens.
Curator Erin Montgomery says:
Imagined Realities is an ambitious curatorial project, showcasing the extraordinary diversity of media employed by twenty-three Visual Art, and Visual Art and Design students across two gallery spaces. It celebrates and explores our perceptions of the world around us. The works in this exhibition address timely themes and highlight how colonial, ecological, historical, migratory and personal events have shaped our imagination and reality.
Imagined Realities is the third student-initiated exhibition to take place as part of the School of the Arts, English and Media’s SIP program, which was established in 2008. It provides students with an excellent opportunity to not only exhibit but develop curatorial skills and practical experience. The curators and participating artists have worked over the mid-year break to develop Imagined Realities, which opens in the first week of Spring session.
